Customer reference for Quality Paving as told to pickapro by Michael Smith from Ballinteer, Dublin 16 on 14-May-2015

When was the work done?
The work was done in January, 2015.

What was involved?
We had a bit of a garden with flower beds and a patio but it was in a bad way. We had James dig it all up and build a two level, stepped up patio in sandstone with lights set into it. A couple of flowerbeds were added as well.

How did you choose James O,Connor?
I had spoken to a few paving contractors but chose James for a couple of reasons. First of all, James was very professional and he really seemed to know what he was talking about. He showed us photographs of work that he had done and even told us where to go to see first hand, projects they had completed and references to speak to. We went to see the work and called a few of his references and they were all very happy with how their own projects with James had turned out.

It was our comfort level with James and his experience that convinced us that he was the right person to do the patio for us.

Had you definite ideas in mind before you talked to James O’Connor?
We knew we were going to have it paved but we didn’t know what material we would use, what design or how big the flower beds should be.

Did James introduce new ideas?
James gave us a quite a few ideas of his own especially with design and available options with regards to materials. He took all of our input on board and always left the final decision up to us.

How did the project run?
Excellent. James and his staff were here on time every day, did the work with no messing about and cleaned up at the end of every day. Everyone was very polite, professional and did a great job. The whole thing took three days to complete.

What was the biggest benefit to you of using James O’Connor?
Obviously the quality of the workmanship was most important but what really stood out to me was the cleanliness of the project. I’m in landscaping and cleanliness is very important to me and that’s what I really noticed with this project.

What’s your favourite part now?
The lighting definitely, it’s a lovely accent to the patio.

Would you recommend James O’Connor to others?
I would highly recommend James and have in fact already recommended him to two of my friends. One has used James already and the other is in the process of getting it set up.

Any tips for other people?
I would suggest Just taking your time with the project and don’t rush into anything. Make sure the design is right and definitely what you want before you go ahead because it’s a little late to start changing your mind halfway through the project.

When was the work done?
The work was done in February, 2015.

What was involved?
I had an old, worn out garden and driveway in front that was only wide enough for one car. I was fed up mowing the grass in front and wanted extra room to maneuver the car and wide enough for two if need be. James arrived on site with a digger, removed what was there and started laying paving stones. A curved flower bed was also part of the original project.

When the job was completed, we were so happy with how it turned out that James suggested adding a matching side path along the house because we have a separate entrance there. It makes the front and side of the house stand out much nicer as a result.

How did you choose James O’Connor?
A neighbour of mine who is a close friend was having his back garden paved by James. I watched the work being carried out and was impressed not only with how nice it looked but how hard the guys were working. When they were finished paving his back garden, it really looked the business.

I asked James to come over and have a chat about the type of work we wanted done and to get a price off him. The quote James gave us wasn’t half of what we were expecting. The last time we checked prices was during the Celtic Tiger years and it was very expensive. You could build a house with the prices they were quoting so we held off. Having already seen the quality of James’s work, we could tell from the quote that we would get good value for money.

Had you definite ideas in mind before you talked to James O’Connor?
I gave James a guideline of what I was looking for and left him to it. I wanted a small, curved flower bed of some sort on the right hand side of the driveway.

Did James introduce new ideas?
He did, yes. It was James who designed the driveway using my ideas and he recommended a black stone border around the rustic paving so that it wouldn’t look like a blank slate. James was also the one who suggested a matching side path leading to our homes side entrance area.

How did the project run?
I have to say everything was spot on and perfect. The project started on Thursday and was finished Saturday morning. The workmanship was excellent and watching the two guys at my house reminded me of how I like to work myself. When I do something I like to do it right and not stop till I get it done. That’s how James’s guys worked on my job, they were very good workers.

What was the biggest benefit to you of using James O’Connor?
Since I already knew that the quality would be good having seen what they did for my neighbour, I would have to say that the price was a real benefit. It was great value for money.

What’s your favourite part now?
I would have to say the flower beds. Since I don’t have to mow the front garden anymore, I’ll have loads of time now to plant flowers, schubs and other things in there. Nothings growing now but its been dug out and it’ll look great once its planted.

Would you recommend James O’Connor to others?
Absolutely and in fact I already have to my brother in law and a friend of mine.

Any tips for other people?
I recommend making sure that you get a good, solid base underneath any paving you get done. If it’s not done right, over time the weight of the car will cause the driveway to sag and water to build up. James uses 804 which is a good grade of stone, chippings and sand underneath.

When was the work done?
The work was done in March, 2012.

What was involved?
I live in a terraced house and before the work started I had a normal front garden with grass and a wall on one side, a railing on the other and a wall going across the front. I wanted to get the front redone because I wanted to get the car in. 95% of my neighbours have driveways and I wanted one as well. Every bit of the old front garden was taken out and a new concrete imprint driveway was put in as well as sidewalls and two pillars in front.

They also put in a concrete patio in the back garden. The back had a very old concrete courtyard that my father had built years ago and it was cracking and breaking up. The new concrete patio is gorgeous and I love being in the garden now.

How did you choose James O’Connor?
I got quotes from a few different paving companies. After speaking to all the companies I found James to be the best with everything. They were very helpful, explained absolutely everything and they quoted me a good price to carry out the work. James also said that they could complete the job quickly as they had a lot of guys to do the everything that was needed. The other paving companies told me that the job would take longer.

James was very good to deal with, he sat down and showed me brochures, pictures and photographs on a laptop of different jobs they had done and various designs, materials and colours I could choose from. James also gave me some addresses and the names of customers in my area of work they had done so that I could see it first hand. I did and I was very happy with what I saw. Choosing them was easy

Had you definite ideas in mind before you talked to James O’Connor?
I knew that I wanted the whole garden done over from scratch and imprint concrete put down because I never wanted to deal with weeds growing up between cracks. What I wasn’t sure about was how the wheelchair ramp I wanted installed could be built to meet my wishes. I wanted a wheelchair ramp that blended in with the driveway and wasn’t really obvious.

Did James introduce new ideas?
James gave me lots of ideas from design, materials, colours, everything. James also gave me several options with regards to wheelchair ramps that were suitable to what I was looking for.

How did the project run?
They came with their machinery promptly at 7:00 every morning, worked all day long and then came back the next day. They were such good workers and kept at it for three days until the project was finished.

What I really liked about dealing with James is that he had so many guys working at my house, there were guys working on the driveway in front and guys doing the patio in back at the same time. Everyone was really professional, knew what they were doing and did everything they said they would do.

What was the biggest benefit to you of using James O’Connor?
Other than the fact that I was delighted with the work, I think the biggest benefit to me was how fast they were able to complete the project. That is a testament to the number of people they had working at my house.

What’s your favourite part now?
Of all the work they did for me, my favourite is the imprint concrete driveway. It’s beautiful, black and comes with a lovely non slip sheen, I love looking at it! The design is like broken bricks crazy paving and the non technical name for it is “cracked ice.” Another thing I really like about it is that the imprint is slight and not too deep so that dirt or debris won’t get stuck into it. That’s important because I wanted low maintenance.

Would you recommend James O’Connor to others?
I would absolutely recommend James to anyone.

Any tips for other people?
Before choosing someone, do your homework, get quotes and a look around at work that they have done. I’ve seen jobs out there that have been very badly done.
